Mother's Day celebrates motherhood and the contribution of mothers in society. In this tradition, mothers are celebrated with a special feast called the five loaves. These are small loaves that come from the earth and serve as a symbol of love and sacrifices. This five loaves means that each person is given a piece of bread to share with others just like how mother's share or give every beautiful thing they have to their child/ children.
During the 1600s in England, the fourth Sunday of Lent (the time just before Easter) became known as Mothering Sunday. On this day Christians honoured Mary, the mother of Jesus, by decorating churches with flowers and jewels. Soon, the Mothering Sunday celebration began to include the celebration of actual mothers too. On this day, maids and servants were allowed to travel home to visit their mothers. Often they would bake a simnel cake, filled with spices and fruit, as a gift. Families would eat lots of food and give small presents to their mothers.
How did Mother’s Day begin?
Two women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis started Mother’s Day (as we know it today) in North America.
In 1870, a time of civil war in America, Julia Ward Howe wanted to create a special day to encourage mothers to come together in peace to try and stop their sons from fighting against each other. This version of Mother’s Day only lasted a few years.
In 1908, Anna Jarvis worked hard to get an official Mother’s Day. She succeeded, and was also responsible for making the white carnation a popular symbol of the day.
Mother's day may just be about once a year, but every time is limited when it comes to the unusual connection between the mother and her child, particularly when it's a relationship filled with adventures, endless laughter, And ever-growing passion. This celebration is important as a dear Mother's Day communication or just as a daily message to show that first woman in your life just how important she is.
Mother's Day is normally the moment to recall all the wonderful things mothers do, and how good mothers are to their kids.
On this Mother's Day, let's appreciate mothers and celebrate motherhood. However, let's remember that flowers and chocolates can only to so much to honour our mothers. More needs to be done to ensure that working mothers have better rights. More needs to be done to ensure that women are not discriminated against or sexually harassed. More needs to be done to ensure that women and children are not used as a weapon of war. More needs to be done to ensure that women do not die from preventable conditions or diseases. (Ochab, E.
